This is a known issue with the applique -- a defect -- on models from between 2002 and 2009, with 90,000 miles on average. You'll need to replace it. Ford (the brand owns and services Mercury) put out a bulletin on how to do it without damage to the rear windshield.

Why is the Engine in My Mercury Grand Marquis Overheating While Idling?

If the car also has a coolant leak, and the Check Engine light or a Low Coolant Warning has shown up on the dash, it's probably because of a crack in the front of the intake manifold. This is a known issue for models from between 1991 and 2008 with 120,000 miles on average. Ford updated the engine between 1999 and 2001, so you may have to replace the manifold yourself.

Why is My Mercury Milan Transmission Having Trouble Shifting?

If shifting is hard, the problem's either a bad powertrain control module (PCM) or a faulty transmission control module (TCM). Both are known issues on models from between 2006 and 2011, with 100,000 miles on average. Update the problem module(s), if not reprogram it/them, and you should be good to go. Otherwise, if your ride's high-mileage, the transmission could be damaged. That'll require at least a valve body replacement, if not a complete transmission rebuild.
