Ford Bronco: 3 Top Upgrades for Central IL

Bronco is an SUV built for nothing less than off-road adventure. It's capable, rugged, roomy, tech-savvy -- everything you've come to expect from Ford.

What it isn't, though, is customized for the unbeaten path in Illinois -- yet. Good thing you came to us. We've got everything you need to get there.

Here are three key areas to customize to take your Bronco to the next level.

Performance

You'll need all the power you can get to tack into the thick of it around, say, Lake of the Woods in Mahomet. To get more, plus a little efficiency bump, add a turbocharger (or, if you're driving, say, a 2022 model, which already has one, upgrade to a supercharger), put in a cold air intake, and install a performance air filter. Together, they'll help enrich the air-to-fuel ratio your engine needs for combustion.

The finishing touch: customize the exhaust. It'll give the SUV that head-turning aggressive note when you rev -- one nobody's going to mistake for other than a Bronco.

Handling

Heading a little further north, to The Cliffs, the off-road park in Marseilles? You'll need serious stability to hit those trails. To get it, mod the suspension -- put in not only new springs for higher ground clearance but also performance shocks and struts.

You can also swap out steel wheels for alloy, if you'd prefer to cut a little weight to gain maneuverability. Already got alloy wheels, but prefer something more durable for all 300 of those acres? Stick with steel.

Towing and Hauling

Of course, you'll find plenty to do anywhere in the Prairie State. To trailer all your favorite weekend toys, say, to a state park, like Beaver Dam or Fox Ridge, put on trailer accessories -- for starters, a hitch, coupler, ball mount, and ball.

But even with, say, the 82.97 cubic feet of max cargo space a 2024 Bronco has when all its seats are folded, you're still not going to be able to fit a mountain bike or kayak in the trunk. Want to transport those anyway? Or skis, or even a snowboard? Install a roof rack or a bike carrier. Your best bet, though: a complete rail system with crossbars.
